Studying architecture in Türkiye
Design studio is central to architecture education, alongside structures, building technology, history and other taught subjects. Look at how those parts connect in the curriculum. Istanbul can offer material for site study, but the educational value depends on what the department actually asks students to investigate and design.

How the studio works
Ask how many students work with each tutor, how frequently they receive individual feedback, and how projects are assessed. Request examples of briefs and student work from different years, rather than only award-winning final projects. Check how design studios connect to structures, materials and environmental design courses. These details help you judge whether the programme’s teaching style suits you across the normal four-year degree, with any preparatory language year planned separately.
The city as a curriculum
Ask whether students survey existing buildings, study neighbourhoods or work on conservation and contemporary urban problems. Request recent project locations and learning objectives: being in Istanbul does not guarantee site-based teaching. Check whether trips are required, how accessible they are, and whether travel, printing or surveying materials are included in your budget. Compare the actual assignments rather than assuming every department uses the city in the same way.
Practising is separate from graduating
A degree does not automatically authorise every architectural service in every country. Ask about the title, professional registration and project-signing rights in your intended destination. In Türkiye, foreign architects need to check work permission and the relevant TMMOB chamber’s temporary-membership requirements; the published procedure distinguishes Turkish graduates from overseas diploma holders. If another country requires additional study or supervised experience, include that in your plan before accepting a four-year undergraduate offer.
Practical things to ask about
Studio degrees carry costs and demands that do not appear in a tuition figure.
- Is there 24-hour studio access, and a desk assigned to you?
- What do models, printing and materials typically cost over a year?
- What software is taught, and are licences provided?
- Is a professional placement part of the programme?
- Is the programme accredited, and by which body?
A FEW MORE ANSWERS
Frequently asked questions
How long is the degree?
The usual undergraduate programme is four years, excluding any language preparation. Özyeğin’s architecture curriculum, for example, runs across eight semesters. Further study or professional requirements abroad are separate; do not confuse them with the duration of the Turkish degree.
Do I need a portfolio to apply?
Check the exact undergraduate international-admission requirements. Do not import a portfolio rule from a master’s programme or from another design degree. If your chosen programme requests one, confirm the format, content, submission method and deadline before preparing it; if it does not, focus on the documents it actually asks for.
