FIELDS
Visual communication and graphic design
A design degree can provide structured practice, critical feedback and access to equipment. Evaluate what you will learn and produce, together with the qualification and experience requirements of roles you want to pursue.
In this guide
Show the decisions behind the work
For each portfolio project, explain the brief, audience, research, alternatives, final result and your own role. Choose work that demonstrates different skills and edit it for the intended application. Self-directed projects can complement coursework; label speculative work clearly and respect copyright and client confidentiality. A portfolio supports an application but does not replace every employer’s qualification or experience requirements.
Read beyond the software list
Compare typography, visual research, interaction, production and theory alongside software training. For example, BİLGİ’s published visual communication curriculum covers editorial, motion and interaction practices. Ask how often projects receive feedback, how assessment works and which facilities students can use. Review recent student work to see whether the program supports the kind of practice you want.
Match communication skills to the role
Design work can involve written briefs, presentations, copy and discussions with clients or production teams. Check the languages required by actual roles rather than assuming all visual work crosses language barriers. Practise explaining and revising work in the languages you plan to use. Remote or freelance arrangements also need appropriate work, tax and contractual checks for where you will be based.
Investigate different design paths
Compare roles in graphic, editorial, packaging, motion, interface and interaction design through current job descriptions and practitioners’ accounts. Note the requested methods, tools and experience. Do not assume UX or product design pays more: compare dated offers for comparable responsibilities and experience. If independent practice interests you, include contracts, pricing, invoicing and project management in your learning plan.
A FEW MORE ANSWERS
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be able to draw?
Check the admission assessment and foundation courses. Sketching can help communicate ideas, but the required skills depend on the program and design practice. Ask to see first-year assignments and preparation guidance.
Is a degree necessary to work in design?
Requirements vary by employer, role and country. Compare actual entry criteria with the program’s teaching, projects, facilities and cost. For work in Türkiye as a foreign national, also check the applicable authorisation; a student residence permit alone is not work permission.
