Studying psychology in Türkiye
Psychology studies behaviour, thought and research methods. A psychology bachelor’s does not confer clinical psychologist status in Türkiye. If clinical work interests you, plan the qualifying postgraduate route and professional requirements alongside the undergraduate choice; a general psychology master’s is not automatically a clinical qualification.

What the undergraduate degree actually is
Look for research methods, statistics, developmental, social and cognitive psychology, biological bases of behaviour and supervised research. The award title and course balance vary; do not infer clinical training from the department name. Read the full curriculum, including required methods courses, and ask how students learn research ethics, analyse data and complete projects. These skills also support non-clinical routes such as user or social research.
Clinical practice requires more
The qualifying clinical education, registration and permitted activities depend on the destination. YÖK’s March 2026 circular addresses clinical psychologist qualifications and historical exceptions; an individual training record needs assessment. Do not treat any master’s as sufficient or equate psychology with psychiatry. In Türkiye, opening an independent health-profession service unit also has citizenship and licensing conditions, separate from employment in an authorised institution. Ask about your intended qualification and setting before planning a private practice.
Language matters more than the brochure suggests
English-taught programmes exist, but teaching language and the language of supervised practice are different questions. Clinical communication must suit the client and the assessment tools being used. Ask the department which languages placements require and what competence it assesses. For work in Türkiye, plan for professional Turkish where the role requires it; elsewhere, check the destination’s language and qualification requirements.
Where psychology graduates actually work
Beyond clinical training, explore human resources, user research, market or social research and postgraduate study. Compare actual vacancies: the required degree, methods, experience and work permission differ by role. Statistics and research projects can help you demonstrate how you collect evidence and interpret results, but they do not guarantee employment. Choose electives and a supervised placement that let you test an interest. Teaching, special education and clinical work can have separate qualification requirements; a psychology bachelor’s degree is not a general authorisation for them.
A FEW MORE ANSWERS
Frequently asked questions
Can I become a therapist with just the bachelor’s?
A psychology bachelor’s alone does not give clinical psychologist status in Türkiye. Check the recognised clinical training route, permitted scope and registration with the destination authority; the word therapist is not a substitute for a specific professional qualification.
Is psychology competitive to enter?
It is popular, and entry requirements vary by university. Ask the admissions office what results were actually admitted to the programme in recent intakes rather than reading the published minimum as a target.
