FIELDS
Nutrition and dietetics
Nutrition and dietetics combines science with practical work involving people, food and health. Compare the full curriculum and placement settings, then check the professional route in the country where you intend to work.

Look beyond hospital placements
A useful comparison includes basic science, nutrition assessment, clinical practice, community nutrition and food-service work. Hacettepe’s published placement rules include child and adult clinical nutrition, institutional food services and community nutrition. This illustrates why the field is broader than hospital-only training. Ask your shortlisted department for its current course list, placement hours, supervision and assessment methods.
Separate employment from opening a practice
Türkiye’s 2025 regulation includes dietitians among the professionals covered by health-profession service units. Article 5 requires Turkish citizenship and professional authority for opening such a unit. An international graduate should therefore not plan on opening one simply after receiving a diploma. Employment in an existing institution is a separate question: check the applicable health-authority and work-permit requirements for the proposed role. For work abroad, contact that country’s regulator about your specific qualification.
Prepare for patient and team communication
Ask which languages are used during placements and how the department assesses readiness. Practise discussing food habits, recording information accurately and explaining a plan respectfully. If placements involve Turkish-speaking patients, develop the Turkish you will need before those rotations. The language printed on a program title does not describe every placement conversation.
Compare the work behind each career title
Explore clinical services, community projects, institutional food services, food-industry roles and research as distinct possibilities. For each, compare actual job descriptions, qualification requirements and work permission. Ask departments for evidence of graduate destinations and available placements. Avoid treating a list of possible sectors as a promise of employment or a salary estimate.
A FEW MORE ANSWERS
Frequently asked questions
Is dietitian the same as nutritionist?
The legal meaning depends on the country. In the UK, HCPC identifies dietitian as a protected title. Do not translate a job title and assume the same professional permission follows in another country; check that country’s definition and registration route.
How many placement hours are there?
Read the specific program’s current course and placement documents. Ask which settings students attend, who supervises them, how placements are allocated and whether travel, equipment or insurance costs fall to the student.
