Molecular biology and genetics

Molecular biology and genetics can prepare you for several kinds of laboratory and research-related work. The useful question is which skills a program lets you practise, and which qualifications your intended role actually requires.

In this guide

Inspect the laboratory component

Bilkent’s curriculum combines foundational science with later molecular biology, genetics and bioinformatics, supported by practical laboratory courses and senior research projects. When comparing programs, ask how much work students perform themselves, what equipment they use and how projects are allocated. Keep a record of methods, troubleshooting and analysis from your own supervised work; a course title alone cannot show those skills.

Match further study to a specific goal

For an academic research goal, examine master’s and doctoral programs, supervisors, project requirements and funding. For an industry goal, compare actual entry-level vacancies and the qualifications they request. Do not assume that every job requires a doctorate or that another degree automatically improves employment prospects. Use the undergraduate years to test which type of work interests you and to prepare the relevant evidence.

Build skills you can demonstrate

Explore research support, quality-related work, biotechnology and biological-data analysis as possible directions. Compare role descriptions before selecting electives. Coding and statistics can be useful additions. Compare recent job requirements and pay information for the location and level of experience you are considering. Produce a small, reproducible analysis or supervised project that shows what you can do, with appropriate permissions for data and laboratory material.

Investigate clinical roles separately

If your aim involves patient-facing genetic counselling, clinical diagnosis or signing medical laboratory reports, identify the exact professional title and its regulator in your target country. Do not assume that a general molecular biology degree grants those permissions. Ask what qualification, registration and supervised training the role requires, and distinguish this from a non-clinical research or data position.

A FEW MORE ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

Can I look for work after the bachelor’s?

Compare roles that explicitly accept your qualification, along with required experience and work authorisation. Ask the department for evidence of graduate destinations. Prepare a CV that explains your actual methods and projects, and assess further study against the requirements of your chosen role.

How should I compare teaching languages?

Check the official language and proficiency rules for each program. Ask about laboratory instructions, reports and project supervision as well as lectures. Develop the language skills required by the workplace or postgraduate program you plan to enter.
