ACADEMIC LIFE
Understanding the grade scale and your GPA
Grades can affect progression and later applications, but the applicable scale and conditions come from your university and any scholarship agreement.
In this guide
Letters, points and the average
Many universities use letter grades and a four-point average, but the letters and numerical values differ. A credit-weighted average gives more weight to higher-credit courses. Check which credits are used, how repeated courses are treated and the difference between semester and cumulative averages in your own regulation. Do not transfer another institution’s letter-grade table to yours.
Find the exact table in your own regulation
Find the current education and examination regulation and any faculty rules. Check the letter-to-point table, course pass conditions, graduation average and treatment of repeated courses. Keep a copy of the version that applies to your enrolment and ask student affairs about any unclear provision.
Check each academic and financial condition separately
Graduation, transfer, double-major admission and scholarships can use different criteria. A scholarship is not necessarily dependent on GPA: an admission discount and an academic merit award may have different continuation rules. Read the terms of your own award, including duration, registration and conduct requirements, and ask the issuing office to explain anything unclear.
Use the requested grading method
Do not present a self-calculated percentage as an official conversion. Use the receiving body’s requested method or a university-issued grading statement, and retain the original transcript and scale. If an application asks you to calculate an equivalent yourself, follow its instructions and label the calculation clearly.
A FEW MORE ANSWERS
Frequently asked questions
What happens if I fail a course?
Check whether the course must be repeated, whether a resit or make-up assessment is available and whether attendance affects eligibility. The institution’s rules determine how the result appears on the transcript and affects the average.
Is a 4.00 scale the same everywhere in Türkiye?
The four-point scale is the common pattern, but the letter bands and thresholds behind it are set by each university. Treat the scale as familiar and the specific numbers as something to check in your own institution’s regulation.
