Academic integrity: what counts and what it costs

Uni Campus TürkiyeUpdated 3 min read

Expectations should be made explicit before an assignment starts. Ask how to attribute sources, what collaboration is allowed and which tools may be used.

What counts as plagiarism here

Presenting another person’s ideas, data or work as your own without appropriate attribution can constitute plagiarism. Translation does not remove the need to cite. Course policies also govern collaboration, reuse of your previous work and generative AI. Read those rules and disclose permitted assistance as required rather than assuming all courses apply the same policy.

A similarity report needs interpretation

A department may use similarity software as part of its review. A percentage alone does not determine whether work is properly attributed, and software does not detect every problem. Ask whether you can review a report, correct citation errors before submission and use the library or writing centre’s guidance. Keep drafts and source notes.

Read the procedure before assuming an outcome

Academic assessment and formal disciplinary proceedings are separate processes governed by the applicable rules and circumstances. Read the notification, evidence requirements, response deadline and appeal route if a concern is raised. A change in enrolment may also affect residence status, but a similarity report or allegation does not automatically cancel a residence permit; ask the competent offices about any actual status change.

How to stay clearly on the right side

Build source records and permission checks into the way you work.

  • Record the source as you read, not afterwards from memory
  • Quote directly and cite, or write the idea in your own words and still cite
  • Ask the lecturer what citation style they want, and use it consistently
  • Ask explicitly whether group discussion, shared code or AI tools are permitted for each assignment
  • Never submit work you did not write, and never let anyone submit yours
  • Ask about uncertain rules before submission and retain the reply.

A FEW MORE ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

Can I use AI tools for assignments?

That depends entirely on the course and the university, and policies are being set and revised. Do not assume either way: ask the lecturer in writing what is permitted for each assignment, and keep the reply. Submitting generated work where it is not permitted is treated as misconduct.

What if I am accused and I did not intend it?

Take it seriously from the first notification, read your university’s disciplinary procedure, and respond within the stated period. Bring your drafts, notes and sources — evidence of how the work was produced is the most useful thing you can present. Ask the international office for support, and do not ignore correspondence in the hope that it resolves itself.
