Studying in English at an Istanbul university
Istanbul offers English-medium degrees, but the language must be checked for the exact programme and intake. Do not infer it from the university’s international marketing. Also check clinical work, internships and compulsory courses, which can have additional language requirements.
In this guide
Language is set per programme, not per university
One university can offer fully English, fully Turkish and partially English programmes. Check the exact department and intake. Under YÖK’s definition, partial foreign-language education means at least 30% of total course credits are taught in that language. A “30% English” programme therefore has a formal mixed-language curriculum. Check the language of the remaining courses and the English proficiency or preparation requirement before choosing it.
What you still need to prove
The university may accept an external certificate, its own proficiency examination or a documented exemption. Fluent speaking alone may not satisfy the formal rule, but the absence of an external certificate does not automatically mean a full preparatory year. Check test dates, accepted versions and locations, score requirements and exemption evidence.
What English-medium instruction does not guarantee
English-medium teaching does not guarantee that every placement or practical requirement is English-only. Medipol’s International School of Medicine, for example, describes a Turkish proficiency requirement for clinical rotations. Check your curriculum and placement rules. For daily life, prepare useful Turkish for housing, healthcare and administration, and arrange language assistance when a document or procedure is unclear.
Confirm it in writing before you accept
Ask the university to confirm, for your specific programme and intake, the language of instruction, the accepted proof of proficiency, the exemption conditions, and whether a preparatory year applies to you and what it costs. Those four answers together determine both your timeline and a large part of your budget, and they are cheap to obtain before you accept an offer and expensive to discover afterwards.
A FEW MORE ANSWERS
Frequently asked questions
Can I complete a degree in Istanbul without Turkish?
It can be possible on an appropriate English-medium programme, but check all compulsory and practical components. A programme’s English label alone does not establish that no Turkish is required.
Are English-taught programmes more expensive?
Compare the actual fee for each language version and intake. Language preparation may add costs in either English or Turkish, depending on your proficiency and the university’s coverage rules.
