The preparatory year: what it is and how to skip it

Uni Campus TürkiyeUpdated 3 min read

Language preparation can materially change both your study plan and budget. Check the proficiency rules alongside the offer, rather than treating them as an administrative detail after admission.

What it is

Hazırlık is intensive language study before progression to the degree programme, where the university requires it. Its actual length depends on your starting level, assessment opportunities and the institution’s rules; it is not automatically twelve months for every student. Check whether your programme has compulsory or optional preparation.

What it actually costs

Build a preparation scenario alongside your direct-entry budget: the language-course fee after any applicable discount, accommodation and living costs for the expected period, and possible extra assessment or repeat costs. Ask whether a shorter completion changes the fee. If preparation delays graduation, include the additional time in your plan without assuming a particular future salary.

How exemption normally works

There are usually two routes out, and universities set the conditions for both. The first is an accepted external language certificate at or above the threshold the university publishes. The second is the university’s own proficiency examination, generally held shortly before term starts, which you sit on arrival. Some institutions also exempt students whose previous education was conducted in the relevant language, subject to documentation. Ask which routes apply to your programme and what each requires, because the conditions differ between universities and between intakes.

Compare the available exemption routes

An accepted external result can give you an earlier answer, but it has a fee, validity period and reporting requirements. The university’s own examination may also be a valid route. Check its calendar, retake and mid-year progression rules; it is incorrect to assume every institution offers only one attempt per year. Choose a route that fits both your preparation and deadlines.

If you do end up in preparation

At the start, note attendance requirements, pass criteria, assessment dates, the maximum permitted period and the consequences of not progressing. Ask about writing, speaking and study-skills support. Use the course to practise the work you will need in your degree: following lectures, taking notes, discussing readings and writing assignments.

A FEW MORE ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

Is the preparatory year compulsory?

It depends on the programme’s rules and whether you meet an accepted proficiency or exemption route. Submit the required evidence by its deadline and obtain confirmation of exemption.

Is the preparatory year charged separately from tuition?

Ask for the preparation fee and scholarship coverage separately from the degree fee. Confirm the billing period, repeat rules and whether any prepaid tuition carries forward.

Does the preparatory year appear on my diploma?

Preparation is separate from the degree curriculum, but the way it is recorded on transcripts or other documents is institutional. Ask student services if you need evidence for recognition or another application.
