LANGUAGE
Can you study in Türkiye without Turkish?
You may be able to begin an English-medium degree without Turkish, but that is a programme-specific answer. Check academic and practical requirements, then plan how you will communicate during your first weeks in Türkiye.

In the classroom
Check the exact teaching language and compulsory curriculum. Some English-medium programmes still require Turkish for clinical placements or other practical work. Ask when that level must be reached and what teaching support is available. This avoids confusing English-language admission with permission to complete every component without Turkish.
Everywhere else
Housing, utilities, banking and health appointments may involve Turkish documents or conversations. Ask whether language assistance is available, keep key information in writing and use qualified help where the consequences matter. Do not sign a contract or consent form you do not understand merely to finish an appointment.
How much is enough
Start with situations you will actually face: giving an address, asking directions, explaining a payment, arranging a repair or describing a symptom. Practise listening as well as set phrases. A university or local language course can provide structure; basic conversation does not replace the proficiency needed for academic or professional tasks.
Build opportunities to use the language
Language exchanges, clubs, sports and shared projects can give you regular practice and help you meet people beyond your first friendship group. Choose activities you enjoy and set realistic goals. Learning Turkish can broaden participation without making anyone’s social experience or housing outcome predictable.
A FEW MORE ANSWERS
Frequently asked questions
Will I be at a disadvantage against Turkish-speaking classmates?
It depends on the programme and activity. Confirm formal language requirements and ask how group work and placements are organised; support and language practice can help with participation.
Should I learn Turkish before arriving?
Basic Turkish can help with arrival. Prioritise the language evidence your chosen programme actually requires, then plan continued learning around its academic and practical deadlines.
