Double major and minor programmes

Uni Campus TürkiyeUpdated 2 min read

Where offered, a double major or minor can add a second field to your studies. Compare the actual course load, eligibility and fees before applying.

In this guide

The difference between the two

A double major leads to a second diploma when both programs’ requirements are met. A minor normally leads to a certificate, not a second degree. Added courses, timetable clashes and prerequisite sequences determine the extra workload and any extension; a double major does not automatically add a fixed number of years.

The conditions

National rules and university directives govern eligibility, application periods and permitted combinations. Check your own program’s announcement, academic-standing requirements and quota. Ask in writing about fees, scholarship coverage, maximum study time and what happens if you leave the second program.

Who it genuinely suits

Compare the second field with the skills you want to develop. Ask whether electives, a minor, projects or later postgraduate study could serve the same aim with a manageable workload. Speak with students and advisors about real timetables and support needs; completion patterns vary and should not be guessed.

Before you apply

Use these questions to compare the additional commitment.

  • Ask for the actual course list and total credits the second programme adds
  • Ask whether the two timetables genuinely fit, in the specific years ahead
  • Ask what happens if you withdraw partway, and whether the minor is an exit route
  • Ask whether any additional fee applies and whether your scholarship covers it
  • Talk to a student currently doing it, about the workload rather than the idea

A FEW MORE ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

Does a double major help with employment?

It can provide useful skills for some roles, but employers assess the relevance of your work and experience as well as qualifications. Explain the connection with concrete projects rather than assuming two diplomas guarantee an advantage.

Can I start a minor later?

There is usually a window of eligible years rather than an open option, because the remaining terms have to be enough to finish. Ask your student affairs office for the specific years in which you may apply, and ask early enough that the answer is still useful.
