ACADEMIC LIFE
Exchange programmes as an international student
Exchange opportunities depend on your university’s agreements and selection process. Citizenship and residence can affect travel arrangements, so prepare academic and immigration steps together.
In this guide
What is usually available
Ask the international office which Erasmus+ or bilateral exchanges are available to your department and study level. Check the partner institutions, eligible activities, application calendar, language conditions and funding. Study and traineeship opportunities can have different procedures and durations.
Check destination entry and residence requirements
Selection for an exchange does not itself grant entry to the host country. Ask its official mission which visa or residence procedure applies to your nationality, current lawful residence, purpose and length of stay. Check which consulate can accept the application and the current appointments; do not assume you must apply from Türkiye or that short-stay visa exemption covers a full exchange term.
Protect your Turkish residence permit
Ask the university and migration authority how the exchange affects your Turkish residence and what to do if the permit expires abroad. Confirm any notification and re-entry documents before travel. Keep the answers with your travel records and check the host’s requirements separately.
Make sure the credits come back with you
Agree how the host courses will count toward your degree before departure. Complete the learning agreement or equivalent approval required by your exchange, retain the signed version and obtain approval for later changes. Ask how failed, changed or unrecognised courses would affect your remaining requirements and graduation plan.
A FEW MORE ANSWERS
Frequently asked questions
Can I go on exchange if I am not a Turkish or EU citizen?
Ask your university whether its current call accepts applicants with your enrolment and status. Check the host’s entry requirements separately; exchange selection, funding and permission to travel are different decisions.
When should I start planning?
Start by checking your university’s selection calendar and the host institution’s nomination and application dates. Work backwards from those dates, including language tests, document preparation and any visa process.
