POSTGRADUATE
Master’s with thesis or without: which one you need
Check the exact degree variant before applying. The curriculum, project or thesis, and progression requirements matter more than the title alone.
In this guide
What each one actually is
A thesis master’s combines coursework with supervised research and a thesis. A non-thesis route centres on coursework and a term project. Compare the actual curriculum, assessment, duration and progression options: the labels alone do not tell you which program fits your professional or research plans.
The doctorate question
If you plan a doctorate through a master’s qualification, check the thesis requirement in the national framework and the target program’s current call. A non-thesis master’s is not generally interchangeable with a thesis master’s for this route. Limited transitional provisions and direct bachelor-to-doctorate routes may exist; ask the graduate school which route applies to your actual qualifications. Do not assume a university can waive the governing rules.
What the thesis route demands of you
A thesis requires a research question, a workable method and sustained writing with supervision. Ask about the expected milestones, resources, ethics review and feedback arrangements. Confirm the thesis and defence language explicitly and assess the academic language support you would need.
Questions to ask before you choose
Ask the graduate school for written answers before comparing offers.
- Does this programme have a thesis and a non-thesis variant, and are they admitted separately?
- Can I transfer between them after starting, and what is lost if I do?
- Would your own doctoral programme accept the non-thesis variant?
- In which language is the thesis written and defended?
- How is a supervisor assigned, and when?
- What is the normal duration, and what happens if the thesis takes longer?
A FEW MORE ANSWERS
Frequently asked questions
Is a non-thesis master’s recognised in my country?
Recognition is decided by your own country’s authority, and some systems treat thesis and non-thesis qualifications differently. Ask your national recognition body about the specific variant in writing before you enrol, naming the programme and whether it includes a thesis.
Which is harder to get into?
Compare the published selection criteria and available places for each program. Neither variant has a universal admission-difficulty ranking.
