POSTGRADUATE
Applying for a master’s: what the application is really for
Graduate applications can combine formal eligibility checks with departmental assessment. Read the current call before preparing statements, references or examination results.

What a postgraduate application typically contains
Requirements are set per university and published on the programme record, but the recurring components are consistent enough to prepare against. Check your own programme’s published list rather than working from this one.
- Your undergraduate diploma and transcript, with the grade average
- A language certificate for the language of instruction
- A statement of purpose or research statement
- A curriculum vitae
- Reference letters, usually academic
- Where required, an entrance examination result or an interview
- For research programmes, sometimes a research proposal
Make the statement specific to the program
If a statement is requested, explain your relevant preparation, academic interests and reasons for choosing this program. Use concrete coursework, projects or experience and follow the stated length. A good statement supports an application; it does not replace mandatory qualifications or determine admission on its own.
Check whether supervisor contact is appropriate
Some research programs welcome contact with prospective supervisors; others use a central process or assign supervisors after admission. Follow the program’s instructions. Where contact is appropriate, send a concise, individual message linking your interests to relevant work and ask about supervision capacity. A positive reply is not an admission or funding offer unless formally stated.
Entrance examinations and interviews
Check accepted tests, score types, minimums, validity dates and exemptions for your applicant category. ALES, GRE, GMAT or language exams are not interchangeable simply because another program accepts them. Ask about interviews or written assessments and ensure results are available by the required date.
A FEW MORE ANSWERS
Frequently asked questions
Does my undergraduate grade average have to be high?
Meet the published minimum and check how selection is weighted. Experience, a statement or supervisor contact cannot be assumed to compensate for an unmet mandatory requirement.
Can I apply with a degree from outside Türkiye?
Ask the graduate school how it assesses your institution and qualification and whether it needs recognition, equivalence or another document for your nationality and field. Those procedures are distinct; prepare the one actually required.
