Getting in without YÖS: the other admission routes

Uni Campus TürkiyeUpdated 3 min read

Admission without TR-YÖS may be possible through an accepted diploma or another examination. National rules still determine who may use international admission, while each university publishes the qualifications and programme conditions it accepts. Check both before comparing routes.

In this guide

Route 1 — your school leaving results

Where the university accepts your school-leaving qualification, it assesses the diploma or provisional graduation evidence and transcript against its published criteria. Record any subject requirements and minimum grades. Do not confuse this academic assessment with the MEB equivalency or authentication documents that may be required at registration; ask when each document is due.

Route 2 — a recognised international examination

Results from established international examinations are widely accepted, which matters if you are already preparing for one or hold a result from an earlier application elsewhere. The set of accepted examinations and the minimum scores differ by institution, so a result that opens one university may fall short at another. Check the accepted list and the threshold per university rather than assuming a common standard.

Route 3 — the university’s own assessment

A university may assess the whole application rather than only one examination score. For example, Özyeğin lists academic achievement, the applicant’s background, a motivation letter and programme capacity in its evaluation. Build the file the chosen institution actually asks for, including its language or exemption route; do not assume every programme is English-medium or uses the same comparative selection method.

  • An accepted diploma or examination result, within any stated validity period
  • Transcript and, where permitted, predicted grades or provisional graduation evidence
  • Evidence for the programme’s language requirement, an exemption or the university’s own test route
  • Passport or the identity document the university accepts
  • Motivation letter, portfolio or references only where requested

How to find which routes your shortlist accepts

Open the university’s current international admissions page and compare the exact programme, applicant category and intake. Catalogue summaries can help you find the source, but coverage and detail vary. Check deadlines directly and ask about any conflict between a general page and the programme’s own instructions.

A caution about “no exam needed” marketing

Admission without a central examination is normal and legitimate at many institutions, so the phrase itself is not a warning sign. What is a warning sign is admission offered without any assessment at all — no transcript reviewed, no documents requested, a place confirmed within hours. A university assessing a dossier still assesses it. If an offer arrives without anyone having looked at your results, the question to ask is which legal entity is issuing it and whether that entity appears on the national higher education register.

A FEW MORE ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

Which is easier, YÖS or direct application?

Neither is easier in general; they suit different candidates. If your school results are strong and recognised, direct assessment avoids months of exam preparation. If your results are weaker but you test well, a good examination score can carry an application that a transcript alone would not. Choose by what you can actually evidence.

Can I apply to several universities on different routes at once?

You can consider parallel applications where the institutions’ rules permit them. Track each document list, fee and deadline separately, and check the commitments created by accepting an offer.

Does the admission route affect my diploma?

The admission route is separate from completing the degree’s academic requirements. It can affect scholarship eligibility or applicant-category conditions. If you need to know how it is documented or treated in overseas recognition, confirm that specific question with the university and receiving authority.
