What is the YÖS exam and who actually needs it?

Uni Campus TürkiyeUpdated 3 min read

Before paying for an entrance exam, check whether your intended programme accepts or requires it. TR-YÖS is one admission route, not a universal entry ticket. Keep admission eligibility, the examination requirement and language proficiency as three separate checks.

In this guide

What does the exam actually test?

The examination tests numerical reasoning and basic mathematics. Prepare with the current ÖSYM guide and official sample material so that you understand the question format and timing. It is not a Turkish-language proficiency test, and a strong result does not waive the programme’s separate language requirement.

Centralised TR-YÖS or a university’s own exam?

TR-YÖS is run centrally by ÖSYM. YÖK announced that public universities would no longer conduct their own international student entrance examinations from 2024; they use TR-YÖS or other qualifications they accept within the national framework. Foundation universities publish their own permitted admission routes. An old page headed “University YÖS” is not evidence that the same exam still runs or is accepted for your intake.

  • Check the current international admissions page, not an archived examination announcement.
  • Match the accepted qualification to your programme, applicant category and intake.
  • A score accepted at one institution may not be accepted at another.

When is it held and when do you apply?

ÖSYM publishes a separate guide and application window for each session. Check the exam date, closing date, available centres, fee and result date together; the result must arrive in time for the university’s deadline. Use the current announcement even if you sat an earlier session, because extensions and administrative details can change.

Where to apply and verify

Start from the examination announcement on ÖSYM’s own website and follow its application link. Read the current candidate guide before paying. Keep control of your candidate account and verify all identity details yourself; assistance with a form does not transfer responsibility for the application.

  • Official announcements: osym.gov.tr and en.osym.gov.tr
  • Use the application portal linked in the current ÖSYM guide.
  • Save the guide, payment receipt and completed application.

Do you even need it?

First check whether you are eligible for the university’s international admission category, then read its accepted-exam and diploma list. Some routes permit a school-leaving qualification or another examination instead of TR-YÖS. A different route still has academic, document and language conditions; “no TR-YÖS” does not mean automatic admission.

A FEW MORE ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

Is YÖS compulsory for all Turkish universities?

No single exam is compulsory for every university and programme. Check both your eligibility for international admission and the institution’s accepted-qualification list for the intake.

Do I need to speak Turkish to sit the exam?

The exam is offered in more than one language, and the available languages for a given cycle are listed in the ÖSYM guide for that cycle. Language of the exam is a separate matter from the language of instruction in your programme, which is set by the university and may still require proof of English or Turkish proficiency.

How long is a result valid?

ÖSYM states that a TR-YÖS result is valid for two years from the examination date. Also check the university’s intake deadline, accepted session and minimum score; national validity does not guarantee a place.

Can an agency sit the exam or apply on my behalf?

You must take the examination yourself. You may seek help understanding the application, but use the official procedure and retain access to your account. A consultant cannot promise a score or an admission decision.
