Studying medicine in Türkiye
Medicine combines a long academic commitment with supervised patient care. Your intended country of practice matters from the start: admission to a medical school does not settle professional registration, immigration permission or access to specialist training.
In this guide
Six years, with a changing clinical workload
The standard medical programme lasts six years, excluding any preparatory language year. Basic medical sciences, clinical placements and a final internship form the broad structure; the timing of patient contact and integrated teaching differs by faculty. Medipol’s International School of Medicine, for example, sets course boards in years I–III, clinical placements in IV–V and internship in VI. Ask for the current curriculum and attendance rules before planning outside work around your studies.
The question that outranks everything else
Where do you intend to practise? Academic recognition, professional registration and permission to work are separate checks. Identify the relevant authorities before comparing offers, then ask how they treat graduates of the particular faculty and programme. Keep written answers and revisit them before graduation because requirements can change during a six-year degree.
- Returning to your own country — check the recognition list and the professional body, both
- Practising in Türkiye — distinguish a Turkish diploma from an overseas qualification, then check health-sector approval and work permission
- The United States — check the ECFMG Sponsor Note and covered graduation years, not only a WDOMS listing
- Elsewhere — identify the licensing authority and ask them directly, in writing
If you are aiming at the United States
For ECFMG certification, a WDOMS listing alone is insufficient: the school needs an ECFMG Sponsor Note covering your graduation year. The 2026 requirements include USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK, credential verification and the applicable clinical and communication-skills route, generally an ECFMG Pathway including OET Medicine. Certification does not guarantee a residency place or a state licence. Use the rules for your application year rather than treating today’s pathway as fixed for six years.
If you want to practise in Türkiye
The Ministry of Labour distinguishes foreign doctors trained in Türkiye from those with overseas diplomas: the latter need diploma equivalency. Foreign nationality alone does not turn a Turkish medical diploma into a foreign qualification. The employment route includes Ministry of Health preliminary permission and an approved work-permit application. Ask the provincial health directorate and prospective employer about registration and the language evidence applicable to your case. Clinical communication in Turkish is a practical training issue even when academic teaching is in English.
Before you accept an offer
Six years is long enough that the checks are worth doing properly. Ask the faculty which teaching hospital you will train in and from which year, what the language of clinical training is even where the pre-clinical years are in English, and what the university’s own graduates have gone on to do. Then ask the licensing authority in the country you intend to practise in what a graduate of that specific institution must do. Get the answers in writing and keep them.
A FEW MORE ANSWERS
Frequently asked questions
Is a Turkish medical degree recognised internationally?
There is no single worldwide recognition decision. Check the medical regulator and academic recognition authority in your intended country, naming the exact university, programme and graduation route. A directory entry or university admission offer does not itself grant a right to practise.
Can I study medicine entirely in English?
English-medium programmes exist, but clinical communication needs a separate check. Medipol’s International School of Medicine rules, for example, retain English theoretical teaching in years IV–VI while clinical practice uses Turkish. Ask your faculty about its own clinical-language requirements and when you must meet them.
How competitive is admission?
Compare the faculty’s current international admission criteria, accepted qualifications, available places and tuition. Do not assume medicine has the smallest quota or highest fee at every institution. Meeting a published minimum is not the same as receiving an offer; build a shortlist that fits both your academic record and your full study budget.
