Studying dentistry in Türkiye
Dentistry normally takes five years, with practical and clinical requirements set by the faculty. International applicants also need an early career check: Türkiye reserves dental practice for Turkish citizens. Admission to a Turkish dental faculty does not remove that restriction; verify any statutory exception relevant to your own status.

Five years, from pre-clinical skills to patient care
Dental education combines biomedical subjects, manual skills, simulation and supervised clinical work. There is no single national rule that all practical work starts in year three. Yeditepe’s published curriculum, for example, includes dental morphology and manipulation in its first semester and clinical subjects later. Ask the faculty to distinguish laboratory practice, observation and treatment of patients, and to explain the prerequisites for each. The five-year degree may take longer if language preparation or repeated clinical requirements are needed.
Ask about the clinic, not the campus
The clinical setting deserves a closer look than a general campus tour. Ask how many students share a dental unit, how supervision works, which procedures students perform and how clinical competence is assessed. Request the faculty’s case-completion and attendance rules, including what happens if you cannot complete a required case. Patient numbers alone do not establish teaching quality: the range of cases, access to supervision and opportunities to practise matter together.
Professional registration in your destination
Ask the dental regulator in your intended country about the exact university, degree, clinical training and nationality category. Request its requirements for recognition, examinations, supervised practice and language evidence rather than assuming a Turkish degree transfers automatically. For a plan to stay in Türkiye, resolve the citizenship issue before treating future employment as part of your budget. Training as a student and working independently as a dentist are different permissions.
A FEW MORE ANSWERS
Frequently asked questions
Is dentistry shorter than medicine?
The standard degree is five years, compared with six for medicine, before any language preparation or further specialty training. Do not infer clinical quality or workload from the difference in duration: compare the actual curriculum and graduation requirements.
Will I treat real patients during the degree?
Clinical training includes supervised patient care, subject to the faculty’s progression rules. Confirm when patient treatment starts, the language needed to communicate with patients, and which clinical requirements must be completed before graduation. Simulation exercises and observing a clinic are not the same as carrying out treatment.
