Studying law in Türkiye
A Turkish law degree focuses on the Turkish legal system. Türkiye lists advocacy among professions reserved for Turkish citizens: admission to a law faculty does not remove that restriction. International applicants should check any applicable statutory exception and the qualification route in their intended country before enrolling.

Where a Turkish law degree takes you
Compare the curriculum in constitutional, civil, criminal, commercial and procedural law, alongside international or comparative electives. Academic recognition of the diploma and admission to legal practice are different decisions. Ask the destination bar or justice authority about citizenship, examinations, professional training and recognition of this particular qualification. For non-practising roles, identify the actual duties: a compliance or commercial position may have different requirements from legal representation, and public appointments can have their own nationality conditions.
Check the language of courses and legal work
Teaching and assessment languages vary by programme; some combine Turkish and foreign-language courses. Turkish legislation and court materials still require strong legal Turkish for work in the Turkish system. Ask which language each compulsory course uses, what proficiency evidence is required and whether preparation adds time or fees. Read a sample syllabus and legal text before deciding how much language preparation you need.
What a law degree is good for beyond practice
You can investigate roles in compliance, policy research, contracts administration or trade, but check the actual duties rather than assuming a job title avoids professional restrictions. Some work requires legal authorisation; public-sector posts may have separate citizenship conditions. Compare vacancies for language, experience and work-permission requirements. If a non-practice route interests you, choose relevant electives and supervised experience, while confirming that the role is open to your status.
What to establish before you apply
Four written answers decide whether this is the right path for you, and all four are obtainable now.
- From your own country’s bar or justice ministry: what does a Turkish law graduate have to complete to practise there?
- From your national recognition body: is the degree recognised academically?
- From the university: what Turkish level is required, and is a preparatory year included?
- From the Turkish bar association: what does a foreign national need in order to practise in Türkiye?
A FEW MORE ANSWERS
Frequently asked questions
Can a foreign national become a lawyer in Türkiye?
The general rule reserves advocacy for Turkish citizens. Ask the relevant bar about your individual status and any statutory exception before treating practice in Türkiye as an available route. A Turkish law diploma alone is not an exemption.
Is there an English-taught law programme?
Some programmes offer English-language courses or a focus on international and comparative law, but a Turkish law faculty degree remains a qualification in Turkish law studied substantially in Turkish. Check the specific programme record for the language of instruction and assessment, and treat anything less than a clear answer as a reason to ask again.
