FIELDS
Economics, finance and banking
Economics, finance and banking share topics but can organise them differently. Compare the balance of economic theory, statistics, programming, accounting, markets and applied projects. The title alone does not tell you the mathematical depth or which roles the curriculum prepares you to investigate.
In this guide
Economics is more mathematical than it looks
Economics commonly combines economic theory with mathematics, statistics and econometrics. Compare the required quantitative courses, data projects and elective options, rather than expecting only discussion of policy and markets. If postgraduate study interests you, read the actual entry prerequisites of prospective programmes: the amount of mathematics needed depends on the route, and a degree title alone does not establish preparation.
Finance and banking are applied training
Finance may emphasise valuation, investment, corporate finance and financial markets. Banking programmes can add credit, operations, risk and regulation. The mathematical depth varies substantially: quantitative finance can be particularly demanding. Compare calculus, statistics, programming and applied projects in the actual curricula, then relate them to specific roles rather than treating one degree as universally easier or better.
The professional qualifications come after
Distinguish a degree, an optional professional credential and a licence required for particular duties. In Türkiye, SPL lists capital-markets titles and duties requiring specific licences; a finance degree alone does not replace them. For your chosen country and role, check the regulator’s education, examination, experience and eligibility rules, plus any work-permission requirements. Treat an advertised examination exemption as something to verify with the awarding body for the exact programme and graduation year.
Studying finance in Istanbul specifically
Ask how the programme connects academic work to practice: current employer projects, guest sessions, career support and any compulsory internship. Request examples from the last completed year and ask whether international students could participate, who found the placements and what language or permission conditions applied. A nearby employer or a logo on a partners page does not promise access. Compare those arrangements alongside the curriculum, campus and cost.
A FEW MORE ANSWERS
Frequently asked questions
Which of the three should I choose?
Choose by the work you want and your appetite for mathematics. Analysis, policy, research or a postgraduate degree points to economics; a commercial role in banking or corporate finance points to finance or banking. If you are unsure, compare the actual four-year course lists side by side — the difference is visible there and not in the titles.
Do I need strong mathematics?
Expect quantitative work in all three fields. Compare the first two years of mathematics and statistics, later econometrics or risk modules, and their prerequisites. Finance is not automatically lighter in mathematics than economics; the specific programme matters.
