TÖMER and Turkish language certification
For a Turkish-taught programme, check how the university establishes Turkish proficiency: an accepted certificate, its own examination or a documented exemption. TÖMER is not one certificate automatically accepted by every institution.

What TÖMER actually refers to
TÖMER is a name used by university language-teaching centres; the issuing institution and course or examination matter. Yunus Emre Institute also offers the Turkish Proficiency Examination (TYS). Before enrolling in a course, ask your target university which providers, certificate types and levels it accepts.
Which level a Turkish-taught programme expects
Read the programme’s current proficiency and exemption rules rather than assuming a single national threshold. Ask whether the required level must be met at registration or before departmental study, and whether a certificate from another centre is accepted. Keep the written answer with your offer.
The preparatory year route
If you do not meet the language requirement, confirm the available preparatory route, placement test, assessment dates, permitted duration and fee. Do not assume that everyone studies for exactly one year or that a tuition discount covers the language course. Ask what happens if you meet the level early or need additional study.
Learning Turkish while studying in English
English-medium instruction does not by itself remove every Turkish-language requirement. Check compulsory courses, internships and patient-facing clinical work. For example, Medipol’s International School of Medicine brochure specifies Turkish proficiency for clinical rotations. Outside class, a practical language course can help with appointments, housing and daily communication.

Frequently asked questions
Will my university accept a certificate from another university’s centre?
Often but not always, and it is the university that decides. Ask your own student affairs office in writing before you pay for a course anywhere, and keep the reply.
How long does it take to reach the required level?
It depends on your starting level, course intensity and progress. Ask the centre for placement and assessment information, then plan both time and cost; a fixed number of months is not a promise of proficiency.
