ARRIVAL
Your phone, the IMEI rule and getting online
A foreign handset and a Turkish SIM have separate registration requirements. Check both before paying, and keep a backup way to receive important messages.

How the rule works
The e-Devlet help centre distinguishes up to 120 days of unregistered use from first use, and a registration application within 365 days of entry into Türkiye. These are different periods. Check your device’s IMEI status and your eligibility through BTK/e-Devlet; the SIM purchase date does not establish the remaining usage period.
Confirm your registration route
Your identity, entry record, previous registrations and mobile line matter. Foreign nationals should ask BTK which documents and channel apply to their status. Do not treat a residence permit card as a universal requirement for every traveller, or assume another student’s procedure applies to you. Resolve eligibility before paying the fee.
Compare the total cost
Check the current official fee, then compare a locally registered handset, warranty and mobile plan using dated prices. No option is automatically cheaper. Paying the fee alone does not complete registration: finish the official process and verify its result.
A workable plan
Keep a dated checklist of registration eligibility, the fee, required documents and a backup connection before departure.
- Check IMEI status and registration eligibility through BTK/e-Devlet.
- Compare the current registration fee with other device options.
- Ask BTK which documents apply to your status.
- Retain entry records and official notifications about the device.
- Check roaming conditions and arrange a backup connection.
- Keep access to numbers used for important verification messages.
Getting a SIM and home internet
Ask an authorised operator which documents it accepts for a line in your own name and whether later identity updates are required. Check tariff duration and cancellation charges. For home internet, confirm installation, commitment, account holder and included services. If internet is provided by your residence, ask about coverage and restrictions rather than assuming it meets your needs.
A FEW MORE ANSWERS
Frequently asked questions
Can I just use my home SIM in roaming?
Ask your home operator about roaming, fair-use conditions and total cost. Check with BTK how your handset and SIM combination is treated. Some services may ask for a local contact number.
What if my phone gets blocked?
Check the IMEI status with BTK and contact your operator to establish the cause. Mobile-network registration and Wi-Fi access are separate. Use official channels; do not pay someone promising an unofficial registration.
