Health insurance as a student in Türkiye

Uni Campus TürkiyeUpdated 2 min read

Do not assume every international student must buy the same private policy. Establish which coverage route you can use, when it must begin and what evidence the residence application requires. Compare medical protection as well as administrative acceptance.

Choose the applicable coverage route

Migration Management explains that foreign students who request SGK general health insurance within three months of first enrolment do not need additional private insurance for that route. Missing that window can remove this option. Accepted bilateral-agreement coverage or another exemption may also require specific evidence. If private insurance is needed, confirm that its period and terms meet the current residence requirements. The SGK window does not extend your lawful-stay deadline.

Check both acceptance and actual coverage

Before paying, obtain the policy wording and ask which hospitals are in network, how outpatient and inpatient treatment are covered, what co-payments and exclusions apply, and how claims are made. Confirm the certificate needed for the residence file separately. The cheapest premium is not necessarily the lowest cost when treatment is needed.

Budgeting for it

Use the actual premium or contribution schedule for the coverage you qualify for. Record the start and end dates, renewal conditions and any uncovered period. Private policies and SGK contributions need not share the same billing cycle; avoid treating every student’s insurance as one fixed annual charge.

A FEW MORE ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

Is travel insurance enough?

Do not assume an ordinary travel policy meets student-residence requirements. Show its wording and certificate to the relevant authority or university office and check the current accepted coverage or exemption route.

Does insurance cover everything at a hospital?

Coverage depends entirely on the policy, and policies differ in what they include, which providers they work with and what you pay yourself. Read what yours covers before you need it rather than at a hospital desk, and keep the policy document somewhere you can reach from your phone.
