The student residence permit, after you arrive

Uni Campus TürkiyeUpdated 4 min read

A student residence permit authorises stay for its approved validity period, subject to continued eligibility. The online application and university submission steps must be coordinated with your lawful stay. Contact the international office early; enrolment and a pending application are not the same as an issued permit.

Who decides, and where you apply

The Presidency of Migration Management decides residence permits, and applications begin on its own portal at e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr. Your university does not grant the permit and neither does any agency; what the university does, under the cooperation protocol signed with the Council of Higher Education in November 2023, is coordinate the submission of student applications. In practice that means your international student office will tell you when and how to hand in your documents, and that instruction is the one to follow.

The sequence

Arrange your student certificate and required evidence with the university, and apply while your visa, exemption or existing permit still provides lawful stay. Follow the current e-ikamet instructions and the university’s file-delivery schedule. If a document or enrolment date threatens that deadline, contact the international office and Migration Management before your stay expires.

  • Confirm the student-residence procedure and your lawful-stay deadline with the university.
  • Obtain the student certificate and arrange address and accepted health-coverage evidence.
  • Complete e-ikamet accurately and save the generated form and reference.
  • Follow the stated appointment and university file-submission instructions.
  • Respond to official requests and retain proof of delivery and payment.

Documents the file normally contains

Requirements are set by the migration authority and can be adjusted, and your university may ask for additions, so treat this as the shape of the file rather than a final checklist. Confirm the current list with your international office before you assemble anything; an incomplete file can delay your application.

  • The e-ikamet form and passport/entry documentation specified for your case
  • Photographs meeting the current biometric specifications
  • Current student certificate and address evidence in the accepted format
  • Accepted health-coverage or exemption documentation
  • Required payment receipts and any additional documents listed for your circumstances

Timing, and the entry stamp

The deadline depends on your lawful stay and application type, not a single number of days after arrival for everyone. Keep a readable copy of your passport and entry record. Follow your application status through official channels and respond promptly to requests; an incomplete online form is not proof that the competent authority has accepted a complete file.

While the application is pending

Keep the application reference and documents issued by the authority. The downloaded application form is not the residence card. Before travelling abroad while a decision is pending, ask Migration Management which application document, payment proof and return conditions apply; do not treat any receipt as automatic permission to leave and re-enter.

A FEW MORE ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

Do I apply for the residence permit before or after I arrive?

The in-country student-residence process is coordinated after entry and enrolment, within your lawful-stay period. Check entry requirements before travelling and ask the university which steps you can prepare in advance.

Can I apply on my own instead of through the university?

You remain responsible for the accuracy and timing of your application. Use e-ikamet and follow the university’s current coordination and submission instructions. If your case falls outside its usual process, obtain directions from Migration Management instead of assuming the same channel applies.

What happens when I graduate or change university?

A student residence permit is tied to your student status, so ending or changing that status affects it. Notify your international office before the change rather than after, and ask what the permit requires in your specific case. Letting a permit lapse quietly is the version of this that causes real problems.
