Working while studying: what to check first

Uni Campus TürkiyeUpdated 2 min read

Before accepting a job or placement, check the authorisation for your enrolment and proposed role. Keep work-permit, residence and university requirements on separate checklists.

In this guide

The shape of the rule

Student residence alone is not work authorisation. The Ministry of Labour’s criteria distinguish formal associate/undergraduate students, who may work part-time after completing their first year with the required authorisation, from formal postgraduate students, to whom those particular restrictions do not apply. Check the role, application route and current rules before accepting work.

Why this matters more than it looks

Unauthorised employment can have consequences for both the worker and employer, as well as immigration consequences. An informal arrangement or a university contact does not replace the required permit or exemption. Ask the competent authority before work begins.

Who to ask, and what

The university’s international office can direct you to relevant support and institutional procedures. Confirm legal eligibility with the Ministry of Labour and residence implications with the migration authority. Explain your degree level, enrolment status and proposed role, and keep their written instructions.

  • Does my permit type allow work at all, and from when?
  • What separate authorisation is required, and who applies for it — me or the employer?
  • Are there limits on hours, and do they differ in term time and holidays?
  • Does my degree level change the answer?
  • Does on-campus or university-arranged work follow different rules?
  • What happens to my residence permit if my work status changes?

Plan your budget without it

Make a version of your budget that does not depend on finding a job immediately. Compare tuition, housing and daily costs with the funds already available to you. Add possible earnings only after checking authorisation, the written offer, hours and how work fits your course requirements.

A FEW MORE ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

Can I work part-time as an undergraduate?

Ask the Ministry of Labour which conditions apply to your enrolment and proposed role. Confirm the first-year, part-time and authorisation requirements rather than treating student status as permission to begin work.

Does an internship required by my programme count as work?

A compulsory internship can have a distinct exemption or administrative route, but do not assume every placement qualifies. Ask the university and Ministry of Labour which documents, insurance and authorisation apply before starting.
