Banking and paying tuition from abroad

Uni Campus TürkiyeUpdated 2 min read

Two money problems arrive in your first weeks: paying the university from abroad before you have a Turkish account, and opening that account once you are here. They have different answers and the first one usually comes first.

In this guide

Paying the university before you arrive

Use the payment method specified by the university and independently verify the beneficiary, currency and reference. It may be a bank transfer or an officially appointed payment provider. Confirm who pays bank and conversion charges, how the payment is matched to your student record and what happens if it arrives late or short. Keep the invoice, instructions and receipt; a letterhead alone does not authenticate an account.

Opening an account once you are here

Ask the chosen bank for its current foreign-customer requirements before visiting. For example, İşbank lists passport or valid residence-permit identification, a foreign identification number or tax number, and address evidence. The bank may request further information and decide whether it can open the account. If your residence card is pending, explain that in advance and ask which documents it accepts.

Before you send any money

Confirm payment details through a channel you initiate using the university’s official contact directory. If an email changes the beneficiary or account, verify the change independently before transferring. Do not rely solely on the sender name, a logo or a familiar-looking attachment.

  • Beneficiary and provider independently confirmed by the university
  • Currency, amount and payment deadline recorded
  • Student/application reference included exactly as requested
  • Transfer, conversion and refund charges understood
  • Sender-name requirements checked if a family member pays
  • Receipt saved and credit to the student account confirmed

A FEW MORE ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

Can my family pay the tuition for me?

Usually yes, and it is common, but the payment still has to carry the reference that links it to your student record. Tell the university in advance that the sender name will differ from yours, because an unmatched payment can sit unallocated and delay your registration.

Do I need a Turkish account before I arrive?

Ask the university whether its accepted payment route requires one. Plan a lawful, usable way to access arrival funds while any account application is pending; a foreign card may not work with every bank or network.
