Working out your real monthly cost in Istanbul
Build your Istanbul budget from the campus and living arrangement you are considering. Housing, food and commuting can vary substantially between students. Separate recurring expenses from arrival costs, then use current written prices for your own choices.

Separate the lines that behave differently
Keep each expense separate so you can see what a housing or commuting decision changes. Record both the payment period and any review or renewal date; a contract price is not necessarily fixed for your entire degree.
- Housing: rent or dorm fee, contract length, deposit and renewal terms
- Building charges and utilities: identify what is included and what is separate
- Transport: actual campus route, transfers and any discount you qualify for
- Food: compare cooking, campus meals and eating out using your weekly routine
- Phone and internet: tariff, setup costs and contract changes
- Health coverage: applicable premiums or contributions and payment dates
- Study materials, personal expenses and an emergency margin
Compare housing with the actual campus journey
Locate your department’s campus before comparing districts. A central address is not necessarily close to a campus outside the centre. Check the route at class times, transfers, last services and the total fare. For illustration, a 90-minute trip each way on five campus days takes 15 hours a week; use your own timetable rather than treating that as a city average.
Where published estimates go wrong
Check the date, location, room type and inclusions behind a published estimate. Add one-off items separately: accommodation deposit or advance payment, travel, necessary document work, setup purchases and applicable residence costs. This avoids comparing a monthly average with the cash needed when you arrive.
Build it from written prices, with dates
Ask each provider for a current price in writing and record the date and currency next to it, exactly as this catalogue does for tuition. Then total it twice: once for a normal month, and once for your arrival month with every one-off cost included. The gap between those two numbers is the thing that catches students out, and seeing it before you travel is the entire point of doing the exercise.

Frequently asked questions
Can you just tell me a monthly figure?
A single figure would need assumptions about housing, campus, meals and the date of the prices. Use current quotes for those choices and the budget worksheet to calculate an estimate that matches your situation.
Is a dormitory cheaper than a shared flat?
Compare the full contract cost and inclusions. Dormitories can also require a security deposit or advance payment; Özyeğin’s published dorm procedure is one example. Check utilities, meals, summer access, cancellation and refund terms for each option.
How much should I bring for the first month?
Total your confirmed arrival payments, a normal month and an emergency margin. Include only costs applicable to you, and distinguish refundable deposits from spending while still allowing enough cash to pay them.
