Choosing a neighbourhood in Istanbul
Choose housing around the faculty you will attend and the services you need. Popular neighbourhoods are useful to explore, but compare specific addresses and journeys instead of relying on a ranking.
In this guide
The rule that beats every neighbourhood ranking
Identify your faculty building, then test the route from each candidate address at the times you expect to travel. Include walking, waiting and transfers in both directions. Check the campus entrance, the final connection and the return after late classes. Multiply by your actual campus days to compare weekly time and cost alongside rent. If possible, try the journey before committing to accommodation.
Anatolian side: campus location examples
On the Anatolian side, compare locations such as Kadıköy, Üsküdar, Ataşehir, Maltepe, Çekmeköy, Ümraniye, Beykoz, Tuzla and Şile against your actual campus. The university’s current faculty address is the reference point. Prices, housing condition and travel times vary within districts as well as between them.
- Ataşehir: Acıbadem University’s Kerem Aydınlar Campus
- Beykoz: Istanbul Medipol’s Kavacık North and South campuses
European side: campus location examples
On the European side, investigate locations around your campus rather than treating the centre as one housing market. Beşiktaş, Beyoğlu, Şişli, Sarıyer, Eyüpsultan, Fatih and western districts offer different journeys. Universities can operate across several sites, so confirm the faculty building before narrowing the search.
- Cibali: Kadir Has University’s Kadir Has Campus
- Fatih: Istanbul Medipol’s Haliç Campus
Is it worth living far out to save rent?
Compare actual dated rents, bills and transport costs rather than assuming outer districts are cheaper. Add the weekly travel time: as an illustration, five days of a 90-minute journey each way means 15 hours a week. That is a planning calculation, not a claim about a particular route. Decide which trade-offs fit your timetable and budget.
Dormitory or shared flat?
Compare university residences, eligible state-residence routes, private residences and shared homes by their actual terms. Ask about deposits, bills, furniture, guests, accessibility, cancellation and holiday use. None of these options guarantees availability or a lower total cost; obtain a written offer for the room you would use.
What should you check before you sign or send money?
Never transfer money for accommodation you have not verified, and treat pressure to pay quickly as the warning sign it usually is. Ask for a written contract, confirm what the deposit covers and how it is returned, check whether aidat and utility bills are included or separate, and verify the identity of whoever is letting the property. If you are still abroad, ask someone you trust to view it in person or arrange a live video walkthrough of the actual flat rather than a photo set. Uni Campus Türkiye does not list verified accommodation or handle housing payments, so nothing here is a booking or an endorsement of a provider.
A FEW MORE ANSWERS
Frequently asked questions
Which district do most students live in?
This guide does not establish where most students live. Start with your campus location, then compare transport, services and written housing offers nearby.
Is the Anatolian side cheaper than the European side?
Compare specific properties, dates and total costs. The European/Anatolian label alone does not determine rent or whether a home is good value for your commute.
Can I arrange housing before I arrive in Istanbul?
Ask official university or residence channels about available places and written booking terms. For a private rental, verify the provider, actual property and contract before paying; ask a trusted person to inspect it or arrange a live walkthrough if you are abroad.
How do I know which campus my program is on?
Use the faculty or program’s current official address and ask the university if it is unclear. Catalogue campus lists help you begin, but a university can teach different programs at different sites.
