ARRIVAL
Istanbul weather and what to pack
Arrival weather does not describe the whole academic year. Prepare for changing conditions and use official forecasts and warnings when planning travel.

Prepare for seasonal changes
Istanbul’s official climate records show warmer summers and cooler, wetter winters. Conditions vary by location and year; snow and severe weather can occur. Layered clothing, a water-resistant outer layer and suitable shoes offer flexibility. Use current forecasts for immediate plans rather than treating climate averages as a promise.
Bring essentials; compare later purchases
Bring clothing for the expected arrival weather and at least one warmer layer. Compare what you own, baggage allowance, current local prices and your budget before deciding which winter items to bring. Buying after arrival may reduce luggage, but is not automatically cheaper.
Include heating and hot water in the comparison
Before signing, ask which heating system the accommodation uses, who pays for it and how the charge is calculated. Request recent winter bills where available; an annual average can hide seasonal differences. Check hot water and any shared building charges too. Compare the same items when considering a residence and a flat.
Summer affects where you want to live
When viewing housing, ask about ventilation, shading, window orientation and cooling. Check which energy costs are included. Before a summer trip, consult the academic calendar for examinations, internships, preparatory study and summer courses; summer is not free time for every program.
