Planning your student week in Istanbul

Uni Campus TürkiyeUpdated 4 min read

Your faculty’s location, transport links and campus services shape a student week in Istanbul. Check the actual campus before planning your commute, meals, study space and activities.

In this guide

Which side of the city is your campus on?

Find the address of the building where your program is taught, not only the university’s main address. Campuses are spread across the European and Anatolian sides, and some institutions use several sites. Compare each location with your timetable and transport options before choosing housing.

  • Anatolian side examples include Ataşehir, Üsküdar, Maltepe, Çekmeköy, Beykoz, Ümraniye, Tuzla and Şile; Kayışdağı is a neighbourhood in Ataşehir.
  • European side campus districts: Beşiktaş, Beyoğlu, Sarıyer, Fatih, Eyüpsultan, Şişli, Kağıthane, Bakırköy, Küçükçekmece, Başakşehir, Zeytinburnu, Avcılar, Beylikdüzü, Büyükçekmece, Silivri
  • Several universities run more than one campus, so confirm which one hosts your specific program

How to estimate your commute

Compare a weekday door-to-door journey at your actual travel time. Include walking, waiting, transfers and the return after late classes. Rail avoids ordinary road congestion, while ferries have specific schedules and weather notices; neither removes the need to check current services. Test a likely route before signing a housing agreement if possible.

Where do students actually study?

Start by checking campus library access, booking rules and opening hours. Compare public libraries, quiet study areas and places for group work near your route. For a café, ask about laptop use and long stays before settling in; a recommendation does not establish the current policy.

What does eating on campus look like?

Check campus menus, meal prices and what any meal package includes. Compare these with nearby restaurants and meals you can prepare at home. Ask about ingredients and dietary needs instead of assuming a set menu is suitable or the cheapest option.

How do you meet people in a city this size?

Look at current student-club and orientation announcements. Ask the international office whether buddy schemes, language exchanges or other support are available for your intake. Choose activities you can attend regularly, and ask about access or language needs before joining.

How does the academic year feel?

Use your own academic calendar to plan registration, examinations, breaks and any summer obligations. Istanbul’s weather changes through the year, so check forecasts before travel and consider winter and summer housing needs. A summer break does not itself confer permission to work.

What should you settle in the first two weeks?

Put confirmed registration and residence deadlines in your calendar, then arrange everyday tasks around them. Ask the university’s relevant unit about its procedures and use the competent public authority for legal requirements. Treat student group-chat advice as a prompt to check the current instructions.

  • University registration and your student card
  • Residence permit steps, through official channels and your international office
  • An İstanbulkart for public transport, and the student version if you are eligible
  • A Turkish mobile number and, if needed, a bank account
  • Health insurance arrangements as required for your status
  • A trial home-to-campus journey before term starts, using your intended transport and checking walking segments and accessibility needs

A FEW MORE ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

Is Istanbul expensive for students?

Compare your actual housing, food, transport and study costs using current written prices. Include the first month’s deposits and setup expenses separately from regular spending.

Do I need to speak Turkish?

Check the language of your exact program and any separate requirements for practical training. Basic Turkish can help with everyday services; ask what language courses or support the university actually offers.

Which side is better, European or Asian?

Compare the actual commute, cost, housing and accessibility for your faculty. Living on the same side may help, but a good direct connection can matter more than the continent label.

How early should I arrive before term starts?

Ask the university for registration, orientation and assessment dates, then check accommodation access and any appointments that require your presence. Plan arrival around those dates and your permitted stay.
