Eight mistakes international students make

Planning gets harder when information is scattered or dated. Use this checklist before accepting an offer or making a payment, and keep the written answers with your application documents.

Choosing before checking recognition at home

Do not assume a recognised Turkish institution settles the use of its degree abroad. The destination authority may assess the institution, programme, teaching mode and qualification for a particular purpose. Establish the process for further study or professional practice before paying a deposit, and ask how it applies to your exact course. A mismatch discovered after graduation may require further assessment or study; do not rely on an automatic remedy.

Budgeting with the advertised tuition only

Check what the tuition offer includes instead of assuming preparation, accommodation or insurance is covered. Build a line-by-line budget for the charges that apply to you, including any required document processing, deposits and residence costs. Record each figure’s source, date, currency and scholarship conditions. Separate one-time arrival expenses from recurring costs so a first-year offer does not hide the later budget.

Assuming the whole university teaches in English

Language of instruction is set per program, not per institution, and the same university commonly runs departments in both languages. Students accept an offer believing they will study in English and discover the requirement for Turkish proficiency or a preparatory year afterwards. The check is to confirm the language on the program record for your exact department and intake, and to ask explicitly whether a preparatory year applies to you and whether it is charged separately.

Renting before testing the commute

Check the exact faculty building rather than the university’s main address. Map the journey from prospective accommodation for a weekday arrival time, including transfers and the walk at each end. Compare alternative routes and service hours, and test the journey in person if possible. Rail can reduce exposure to road traffic, but disruptions and crowded transfers can still affect it. Do this before committing to a lease.

Paying for accommodation nobody has seen

For a private rental, arrange a viewing yourself or through someone you trust before transferring money. Verify the person’s identity and authority to let the property, and read the contract, deposit and cancellation terms. For an official dormitory booked from abroad, contact its operator through independently verified university channels. Photographs and a request to pay urgently are not evidence that a property or booking is genuine.

Leaving documents and permits to the last week

Start with the current university and authority checklists. Confirm whether equivalency, translation or legalisation is required for each document before paying for it. Work backwards from registration and any applicable visa or residence dates, listing the issuing authority, appointment needs and dependencies. Keep a buffer for corrections, and distinguish documents needed to apply from originals needed to register.

Trusting a figure with no source and no date

A figure can be accurate for an earlier intake yet unsuitable for your budget now. Confirm fees with the university or provider that charges them, noting academic year, currency, tax treatment where relevant and what is included. If an intermediary supplies the quote, ask for the underlying official offer and keep service fees separate. Treat undated averages as research prompts, not confirmed personal costs.

Believing an admission or visa guarantee

An intermediary cannot promise the decision of a university or public authority. Distinguish a verified university offer from a salesperson’s prediction, and a service commitment from a visa or residence outcome. Ask which authority decides, what conditions remain and how to confirm the document directly. MFA guidance directs study-visa questions to Turkish missions; an education offer is not itself immigration permission.

Frequently asked questions

Which of these mistakes is the most expensive?

The financial effect depends on the case. A recognition mismatch can affect the whole purpose of a degree, while a payment to a fraudulent provider can cause immediate loss. Check both the intended use of the qualification and the identity and terms of the recipient before committing money.

How do I verify information I find online?

Trace every claim to a primary source: the university for admission conditions and fees, the consulate for visas, the migration authority for residence, and your own country’s education authority for recognition. If a page states a figure without naming where it came from and when it was checked, treat it as a starting hint rather than information you can plan around.
